This is the story of me, Dax Kalmer. I was born in 1980, in Salem, Massachusetts. My father was a raging alcoholic, he would spend most of his time in a bar, and whenever he did come home he’d play his favorite activity, beating his son. Yes, my childhood was a little rough but I managed to become better. I started to learn magic at the age of twelve. I had met an old man down the street when I was nine years old. He became my best and only friend, he told me stories of Merlin and Morgana. He told them in such detail that it was almost like he was personally there, watching it. I became obsessed with this idea of magic, I started to find out everything I could about it. At first he was just a friend of mine, but he would soon become more than that, he would soon become the dictator of my entire life. At the age of twelve I’ve found this book in an old occult store, it had shown actual spells I could do. I didn’t think anything of it at first. I knew magic didn’t really exist, I just liked hearing the stories because they’re fun. I tested them out a little but it didn’t work. I bought the book anyways because I thought it would just be a good read.
“Why not”, I thought to myself.
I continued reading when I got home. I realized as I was reading that I had to imagine myself doing the spell.
“How could I imagine the spell if I didn’t know what it looked like?” I thought.
I decided to still give it a try, I just imagined myself doing the actions but not the spell itself. I did just that and what would you know it worked. I did the energy field spell, the one where you have to interlock your pinkie fingers. I was so amazed, I didn’t even know magic was possible. I was in absolute shock. I went to Alsons’ house, I showed him the book and told him that I was able to do the spells. He looked at me skepictly, I then proceed to perform the spell I did before. He stared at me, shocked.
“Dax,” he said to me in a thick German accent, “I never thought I would see a new generation of Mages in my lifetime. We must train you, we must show you the greatness you can achieve.”
This was the beginning of something massive to happen in my life. This was the start of me becoming a very famous and powerful mage.
“Please, teach me how to use magic.” I said to him.
“Alright, I’ll teach you, little boy, follow me. I’ve got something for you.” I followed him through his living room, kitchen, then outside. He led me to a gardening shed, he did a magic spell and the doors opened. I followed him in and that’s when I saw it. Bookcases lining the wall, towering over me.
An odd-looking table filled with equally odd looking things. On the back wall, a suit, not like a business suit but like a military uniform.
“This was my battle uniform. I’ve worn it in battle, sometimes against other Mages, sometimes against regular people.”
“What regular people did you fight?” I asked.
“The Allied Powers during World War Two. I’m not a Nazi but my Mage leader was. I didn’t even know what was going on, I was just told that we were going to war. I thought they were people who wanted to kill Mages. Nevermind that, let’s start some learning.”
He walked over to a bookshelf, started reading the spines, then finally pulled one out. He blew on the cover, a sheet of dust flying into the air.
“Here we are.” he said, “This book is for beginner Mages like yourself. Here, look through it, pick a spell you’d like to try and then show me how you think it would be done.”
I started flicking through it, looking at the spells, I finally found one I liked, electric magic. I showed Alfons the spell I was going to do, he nodded, so I proceed. I looked at the spell one last time, gave him the book back and tried it. I put my pointer finger and thumb together first. Then I put my ring finger and thumb together, and finally I interlocked my pinkies together. Nothing happened, so I tried a second time and success! I did it, rays of electricity came off from my hands.
“Nice going my boy!” Alfons said, I shook my hands like I was drying them to turn the spell off. “Now, let’s actually start teaching.” Alfons told me, “How about you come to me everyday after school, starting tomorrow, met me back here in the shed and I’ll teach you magic. That sound good?”
“Yeah!” I left, trembling with excitement at the fact that I’m going to be learning real magic.
I went back to his house everyday like I promised. Alfons showed me new spells, some Mage history, Mage culture, and so many other things, it boggles my mind with all the things I had to learn, but I was dedicated, I wanted to become the best Mage I possibly could. My dad never knew that I was going to Alfons because I went when he was passed out. I knew my dad would have never allowed me too if I went when he was awake. One day, when I was thirteen I arrived home, I was greeted with my father standing next to me in the doorway. “Where were you?” He told me.
“I was with the old man down the street, not that it’s any of your business.”
“Don’t you ever! Talk to me like that again, ya’ hear!”
He lifted the belt in his hand, ready to strike me, my rage grew, that’s when it happened. I formed the electricity spell I had learned and fried my father. He at first yelped, like he just got a shock, then it turned into a blood-curdling scream. Radiating throughout the whole house, the dark room filled with blue light, I was in absolute ecstasy. I was finally able to get payback for all the torture he had inflicted onto me. I stopped electrocuting him, wouldn’t want to make it look like an absolute murder, realizing that I went into the kitchen, grabbed a knife, I started to pry off the outlet wall plate, I pulled my father over to the outlet, rubbed the knife in his hands, and laid it down next to him. I ran to the telephone and called 911. I explained the situation using the most convincing lie I could come up with.
The ambulance and police came down to my house. They took my father away to the hospital, the police told me that he might not live, he asked me if I had anyone else I could stay with. I told him: “the old man down the street. He’s a family friend.”
I went to Alfons, told him my lie that I made up, and he stayed as my legal guardian ever since.
He was such a nice man, such a great father too. He taught me about magic every day as he had promised. After about five years, he had stopped my teaching, Alfons had become too sick to teach me anymore. He died about a year after that. I still didn’t stop learning, I had continued to learn the rest of my life, my thirst for knowledge on magic has never and will never end. After that, I tried to live my life like normal, I got a job, an apartment, I lived my life like any normal person. It didn’t last very long though because when I was at the age of about twenty years old I had been stopped by some men in black suits. The men didn’t look human, they had a sickly gray skin color, wore dark shades over their eyes too. “You’re coming with us.” The men had said in perfect unison. The men had threw a bag over my head, handcuffed me, and threw me into a van. The van sped off, I had no idea where we were going, They, wouldn’t talk to me. I couldn’t do any magic because something was blocking my ability to do the spell. Did they know about magic? I thought. They led me to a room, (I still have no idea where we are.) sat me into a chair, pulled off the hood, and left. So there I was sitting in a empty room, nothing around me.
After a little while of waiting, a man came into the room, this one looking different from the other two. He looked more human, he was dressed the same black suit but didn’t have glasses. His skin was the same color as mine too. “So,” he says, “word around town is that you’re a Mage. Is this true?”
“Yeah, I dabbled in magic. What’s it to you?” I snapped back.
“Well, I’m from the government, and the government would like you to help us.”
“To do what exactly?” I asked, “Well, all you have to know is that the government knows magic exist, and we’re going to erase it from history.”
I could feel my rage bubbling as he spoke.
“We are in the process of taking all Mages in the United States, and making them do whatever we could possibly want. We could make them our slaves, torture them just for fun, use them as cannon fodder in the next war, there are many possibilities. We know how powerful you are, you would be an excellent asset to The War on Terror. You’ll be our secret weapon on the front lines. You’ll never gain any restriction though, you’ll be wiped away from history, after that we’ll do whatever we want with you. We’ll most likely torture you, just for fun.”
My rage was at an all-time high, I snarled at him, broke free from my handcuffs and made him explode into a bloody mess. I grinned, while covered in his blood. I blew the door out, as soon as I did I heard alarms sound.
I ran, looking for the rest of the Mages. I killed anyone who stood in my way. I found a hallway of rooms, each with a nameplate on it. I tried to bust all the doors open but it didn’t work, they must be protected against magic. I grabbed a keycard from of the dead guards and started opening doors. I opened the first door and looked inside, it smelt horrid. That’s when I saw a kid, she look so weak and frail, like they haven’t fed her in weeks, there were feces all around her. I asked her what happened but she couldn’t speak, I unhooked her from the wall chains covering her hands and dragged her from out of the room. I went to the next, in here was the same thing. They treated these people like they were nothing. It was horrible. I opened all the rooms and carried everyone out of there. As I was walking I saw a room filled with explosive material, I grinned. I brought everyone outside, lied them on the ground, and went back inside. I made the fire spell and blew the room up. I sprinted outside and watch the building burn down. After that day, the evil side of me had went away, I no longer wanted to kill in complete cold-blood like I did before. I wanted to help fellow Mages like me make sure this never happens again. I brought all the Mages I rescued to a hospital to be healed. After that I went to a nearby town, got in contact with some Mages in the local area, and created a group of Mages all with the same goal; never allow the government to eliminate us.
